They are made from galvanised corrugated iron (CGI) or steel, PVC, or plastic. The best is the galvanised variety. This lightweight yet strong building material is made of sheets of hot-dipped or electro-galvanized mild steel that is also coated with zinc. It can also be made from a blend of zinc, aluminium, and silicon-coated steel. It is then cold-rolled and folded into ridges or curves, and grooves to produce the famous linear corrugated pattern. This pattern offers the corrugated sheets their amazing strength over small surface areas.

How Did It Get Its Name?


Corrugated steel was developed by Henry Palmer who was an engineer who worked for the London Dock Company in the 1820s. The corrugated steel quickly became a popular commodity due to its ability to be quickly manufactured and used to build structures with minimal construction skills. The galvanization process was developed by coating the steel or iron in zinc.

This process was simultaneously developed in both England and France in 1837 but was named for Luigi Galvani, after one of the creators. Zinc was chosen for the coating process because it weathers at an extremely slow rate making it longer lasting out in the elements. The added zinc also helps to:

The sheets are usually manufactured in a thickness range of 0.15mm to 2.0 mm. Width ranges from 800mm to 1560mm. The weight of the zinc involved varies with the thickness of the sheet. Their depth of corrugation is typically12.5mm and 17.5mm. Each sheet usually holds 8, 10, 11, or 13 corrugations.

Economical and Eco-Friendly


Galvanizing is lower in cost than many other materials. The cost is so low that it makes the corrugated sheeting one of the most popular building materials of all time. It is also nearly maintenance free making them cheaper to manage than most other building materials.

They can last longer than wood or man-made materials which make them an excellent economical choice for property improvement. When used as siding, this material is virtually maintenance free needing only to be cleaned off only occasionally, to remove the buildup of grime, and environmental pollution.
